Growing plants in our home kitchen garden and growing indoor plants has always admired us as a human being close to nature. Plants helps us in many ways, plants not only cleanse and purify air but also adds aesthetic to the indoor space or compound. It also works effectively as an effective humidifier.

Vegetable garden

Tips:

  1. Add enough water, just be sure to use a container that lets excess water drain out. If roots sit in excess water, they will rot.
  2. Add enough water to moisten the soil without washing out the seed.
  3. You can purchase a potting mix from the market, or you can use cowpots which are containers made from composted cow manure.
  4. Most vegetables and other plants do best with 14-16 hours of sunlight.
  5. 65-75°F temprature is best for most of the plants, with variance of 10°F either.
  6. Signs of Over watering are discoloration and Plant might stop growing.

 

Note: You would like to start the seed in a pot, hot environment is favourable for growth. After plants develop a thicker cuticle and avoid water loss and are ready for harsh weather conditions you can transplant it into the garden.

Plant common name is Marjoram, sweet marjoram, In Sanskrit and urdu it is known as marwa. It is mostly cultivated in India. Its Botanical name is Origanum majorana and it is a member of a Lamiaceae(mint) family.

This mediterranean herb plant can be grown in direct or indirect sunlight indoors and home garden. You need to water it regularly drain the excess water. Flowers are blossom in mild summer and rainy days, should be protected in harsh cold climate. Planting from seeds need favourable warm environment and moist soil. Also plant can be grown from cuttings and root division. Marua leaves may be used in kitchen in many recepies and it is also known for its medcinal uses. They give nice scentic flavor. And helps maintain fresh air.

 

Lemon

Lemon trees can be easily grown from seeds Or buy a two to three year old dwarf tree from the nursery. Choose a good clay or ceramic pot good enough to hold the seedlings in a good way. Pot must must have several holes in the bottom to pass air.

 

Use the good soil mix for citrus plants slightly acidic, water regularly and keep the plant moist. you can use a spray to sprinkle water. In winter it requires 12 hours of sunlight.

It can grow up to 20 feet in height in outdoors. We can easily grow lemon plant in our backyard garden. Lemon fruits will mostly ripe in six to nine months.

 

Tomatoes

Expect the seeds to germinate in 5 to 10 days. When it has grown 3 to 4 inches transplant the seedlings to potting soil and water it regularly and allow medium sunlight to come.

When the plants bloom tap the main stem or branches with your finger slightly you will see pollen falling, this encourages pollination. It can be planted in hanging baskets and window boxes. Cherry tomatoes are most likely to grow easily.

Mint leaves always add taste to our food and tea. Root some seeds or plant stems and keep it in a deep pot. We can also use broken pots in our house.
Ground the seeds in a soil and pour water using the flask. Add enough water to the pot and watch excess water drain, do not let it be soggy.

 

Indoor garden

Those who live in urban areas and do not have much space outside growing indoor plants may be a fit for them. It is important to choose the right plant whether you are growing veggies in your kitchen garden or some indoor plants inside.

Plants needs light to photosynthesize, always grow plants in a place under direct or indirect sunlight is available. We only need to give water regularly and make them moist. Add organic soil or a single liquid dose of fertilizer to potting mix. In dry season mist plants daily.

There are some low maintainance indoor plants to choose from in India.

 

Money Plant

According to Feng Shui principles develop harmony and bring in prosperity. It is believed that having a money plant at home brings good luck, happiness, wealth and prosperity.

Money plants (pothos) are evergreen climbers that can grow up to 20 m high. They are very easy to grow, both in soil and water filled bottles, jars or any container.

Grow in a place where indirect sunlight is reaching and area is not too dry. Exposure to direct sunlight may result in scorching leaves. Water regularly but do not make it Overwatering, let the excess water drain through the pot holes so the roots do not sit in water. Cutting and pruning is good, cut about 1/3rd of a stem at 45 degrees angle.

 

Indian Basil(Tulsi)

It helps in purifying the inner air and can be easily grown in home compound or near window having regular and direct sunlight. Water it regulary but do not make it over water.

 

Cast-Iron plant

Aspidistra elatior, also known as bar room plant. These plants can survive most extreme conditions where other plants would die. This is native to place in Japan, Taiwan and China. Best grown in indoors where indirect sunlight is available. Not much care & attention is needed, it can thrive a week without water.
It slowly grows over years and live for many years. It elevates the landscape area while grown in a background in flowerbed. In hot summers and dry winters water them regularly.

 

Dracaena reflexa

It can grow upto 12 feet, you can prune and shape its leaves. New leaves will sprout below the cut in a few weeks. Water it regularly but do not strain with excess water.

This plant also known as golden cane palm, areca palm, yellow palm, or butterfly palm, native to Madagascar Africa. This handsome looking plant can add to your home decor.
This leafy plant can be grown in indirect sunlight. Do not exposed to direct sunlight. The plant can grow as high as 30 feet outdoors and about 7 feet at indoor.
It helps purify the air and it also works as an effective humidifier. Water enough to keep the soil moist and humid avoid overwatering.

 

Sansevieria

It is yet easy to maintain. It requires less attention and care as it can survive for a week with less water. But do not make it over water or make it soggy as it can easily rot. Container must have enough holes at bottom to drain excess water through soil.

Rose petals and bunches are presented for love and care. Roses are a beautiful flowers, they bloom in early springs. Plant requires a good sunlight atleast 6 hours a day choose the place accordingly.
Growing plants in a two way either use bare roots or young plant in a small pot and plant in the ground about 1 to 2 feet deep. Best time to plant a rose is between spring and fall.
Use fertilzer or cow manure and kitchen waste to create a soil mix, add it to ground. Water it thoroughly, roses need a lot of water to grow healthy.
Pruning helps keep the plant beautiful and healthy. Having tall branches may be damaged by heavy winds and frosts during the winter we can make it trim.
Add a 2 to 3 inch layer of organic mulch around rose bushes will help retain moisture and may also offer some winter protection. They are susceptible to fungal diseases, such as black spot and powdery mildew, especially when their foliage is kept too wet.
